Tall Ship Niagara Visits in 2002

The U.S. Brig Niagara was Commodore Perry’s flagship during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 Perry’s victory over a British fleet secured the Great Lakes for America. Had he lost, we would all be speaking Canadian today!

In August 2002 Niagara paid a port call to Marquette, becoming the first tall ship to visit the city in a century. The visit was arranged through the Museum.

The Niagara has a sparred length of 198 feet and her mainmast soars 118 feet above the deck. This vessel is a recreation of the original Niagara and was built in the 1980s. She does have original timber incorporated in the hull. She is also the official flagship of the State of Pennsylvania and spends summers cruising the nation’s waterways to help interpret America’s rich maritime history.
